Character Setting

Edit

Kinemon is a 36-year-old samurai from Wano's Kuri region, best known as the "Foxfire Kinemon" and the leader of the Nine Red Scabbards. He is a loyal retainer of the Kozuki family and a key figure in the quest to free Wano from the rule of Kurozumi Orochi and the Yonko Kaido. Though once a rough delinquent in his youth, Kinemon matured into an honorable samurai, respected for his unwavering sense of duty, resourcefulness, and signature sword style that can cut through flames. His adventures span from time-traveling twenty years into the future, aiding Luffy D. Monkey and friends, to battling great foes for the sake of Wano’s dawn and freedom. Kinemon’s journey is full of twists, luck, and heartfelt moments, making him one of the most memorable characters in the story.

Kinemon is a very tall man, standing at 295 cm.

He has thick, upward-pointing sideburns, a chin beard, and strong facial features.

His hairstyle is a traditional topknot, and his outfit is a kimono with the right half orange and the left half black and white striped.

He always carries two swords at his left waist.

He has a tattoo of the Kozuki clan crest on his back.

During battles, he alters his kimono to move more freely.

His appearance and clothing resemble a classic ronin from samurai stories.

Kinemon uses "sessha" (old-fashioned "I") and speaks in a stereotypical samurai manner.

He acts with a strong sense of honor, always repaying favors with his life.

He is very proud, refuses to complain about pain or cold, and would rather commit seppuku than endure shame.

Kinemon has old-fashioned views about women, thinking they should remain behind men, and considers it humiliating if struck by a woman like Nami—though in his youth, he was often hit by his now-wife Tsuru.

He is also a bit of a pervert, sometimes hiding his powers just to see more revealing outfits.

Despite this, his feelings for his wife are real, and he wishes her happiness even during times of separation.

Kinemon hates both pirates and dragons, especially dragons, due to his deep grudge against Kaido.

When he first meets Luffy D. Monkey and his crew, he dislikes them for being pirates. Over time, he trusts them deeply and calls them all "dono" (a term of respect).

He greatly believes in Luffy, once calling him "the man who will stand atop this sea."

He's seen as a smart man by Orion Kurozumi and Denjiro, and he often acts as the strategist and leader of his group.

However, he sometimes makes mistakes, and his "good luck" often helps him as much as his wits.

Kinemon cares about tradition, his comrades, and especially his master, Oden Kouzuki.

He is also fiercely competitive with Zoro Roronoa, especially regarding the sword known as Shusui.

Kinemon was born 56 years before the current events.

He spent his youth as a troublemaker in the Flower Capital, with blond hair in a pompadour style.

He gambled, stole money from friends and local yakuza, and was notorious for poor decisions, but was always very strong in a fight.

Becoming a Samurai

When he tried to sell a white boar taken from some thugs, he caused the wrath of the "Mountain God," a giant boar, to be unleashed on the city.

Kozuki Oden defeated the beast and took the blame, leading Kinemon to admire him and pledge loyalty.

Soon after, with Denjiro, he supported Oden in his travels and helped clean up Kuri, making it a place of peace.

Through defeat and learning from Yasuie Shimotsuki and others, Kinemon and his friends became proper samurai fit for Oden.

They later welcomed Inuarashi, Nekomamushi, and Kawamatsu into their ranks.

Oden’s Voyage and Wano's Decline

Oden left with Whitebeard, then with Gol D. Roger, while Kinemon held Kuri together, waiting for his return.

In Oden’s absence, Kurozumi Orochi seized power and, with Kaido, oppressed the people.

When Oden came back, he endured public humiliation for five years to try to save Wano, while Kinemon and others stood by him.

When the truth was exposed and friends slaughtered, Kinemon and the other Nine Red Scabbards fought by Oden’s side against Kaido and Orochi but were defeated by treachery.

The Time-Skip

During the boiling execution, Oden held the scabbards aloft to save them.

Following Oden’s orders and Tokki’s time-travel ability, Kinemon, Raizou, Kikunojou, and Momonosuke Kouzuki were sent forward twenty years.

Waking in a ruined Wano, they decided to flee and find friends and allies.

Adventures outside Wano saw them land, shipwrecked, on Dressrosa, become separated, and search for each other across dangerous lands and among foes.

Kinemon is the user of the Fuku Fuku no Mi, a Paramecia-type devil fruit.

He can transform leaves, stones, or similar items into any clothing he imagines by placing them on a person’s head and saying “Doron!”

The clothing disappears when removed or damaged.

He is a master of the "Foxfire Style" swordsmanship.

This lets him create and cut through fire with his swords.

He is skilled with one sword or two and also utilizes Oden's signature "Oden Two-Sword Style."

His swords, named Sukesaburo and Kakusaburo, are standard-grade blades.

Kinemon is also able to use Armament and Observation Haki.

Kinemon is the leader of the Nine Red Scabbards, who are loyal followers of Oden Kouzuki.

He is married to Tsuru, for whom he cares deeply.

He acts as a protective father figure to Momonosuke Kouzuki, often pretending to be his real father while in hiding.

His rivals and friends include Zoro Roronoa, with whom he argues about the national treasure sword Shusui.

He trusts Luffy D. Monkey and the Straw Hat Pirates, especially after their many adventures together.

Kinemon's model is based on the famous actor Nakamura Kinnosuke (also known as Yorozuya Kinnosuke).

His theme animal is the fox.

He likes sweet red-bean soup and radish, hates tanuki udon and wine, and enjoys visiting teahouses with his wife.

Kinemon has the unusual ability to speak by farting, a comic skill that helped him communicate when he was only a pair of legs.

He has incredible luck that often saves him and his friends at just the right time.

This may be a hidden side of his "fuku" (luck) power from his devil fruit.

  • "I have come to this island to save my son! I will cut down anyone who gets in my way, no matter how many!"
  • "We will burn everything! We don't need a ship to go back!"
  • "Luffy-dono is not like you!"
  • "He is the man who will stand at the top of this sea! Even if we all die, as long as he is here!"
  • "Dawn will come to Wano! That is a promise to my master!"

Kinemon’s Early Days

Kinemon was a notorious troublemaker in the Flower Capital, known for gambling and theft, but was unmatched in a fight.

His admiration for Oden Kouzuki began after Oden bravely ended the "Mountain God Incident," leading Kinemon to become his first retainer.

With Denjiro and others, Kinemon followed Oden to Kuri, helping defeat Ashura Doji and transforming the land into a safe place.

Learning manners and knowledge thanks to Yasuie Shimotsuki, he grew into a worthy samurai.

Oden’s Journey and Wano’s Fall

When Oden left Wano to travel the seas, Kinemon managed Kuri while the country suffered Orochi's harsh rule with Kaido.

When Oden returned, Kinemon and friends endured hard times and humiliation to support him.

Finally, Oden and the scabbards rebelled but were beaten by dirty tricks.

In the end, Oden sacrificed himself to protect them, and with Toki's Devil Fruit power, Kinemon and a few others were sent twenty years to the future.

The Future and New World Adventures

Arriving in the future, they found Wano in ruins.

They tried to find friends but were attacked and forced to leave.

Kinemon and others ended up shipwrecked, landed on Dressrosa, and were separated.

Punk Hazard Arc

On Punk Hazard, Kinemon met the Straw Hat Pirates, at first hating pirates but soon accepting their help to save Momonosuke Kouzuki and himself.

He was cut in three by Law's power and had to be reassembled by the crew.

Afterward, he trusted the Straw Hats and journeyed with them to Dressrosa.

Dressrosa Arc

He was separated from the group, found Kurozumi Kanjuurou, and helped many prisoners escape.

He also helped try to stop Doflamingo's birdcage from crushing the city.

Zou Arc

On Zou, his true identity as a retainer of the Kozuki family was revealed.

He and Momonosuke Kouzuki revealed their plan to defeat Kaido and Orochi and formed an alliance with Luffy and others.

Wano Country Arc

Kinemon, now a central figure, led the plan to attack Onigashima, hoping to gather 5,000 fighters.

He helped prepare the samurai for battle, tried to recruit Ashura Doji, and worked with Zoro Roronoa and others.

Though betrayed by Kurozumi Kanjuurou, his good fortune accidentally led everyone to the real meeting point, saving many allies.

# Onigashima Raid

At the raid on Onigashima, Kinemon split his forces and led the main group in disguise.

He faced many battles, including fighting Kaido with the other samurai on the rooftop.

They used their best techniques—including Oden’s “Paradise Totsuka”—but could not defeat Kaido.

After a hard fight and being saved again by luck, Kinemon was gravely wounded but survived, thanks to his still-not-fully-healed body from Law’s earlier ability.

He helped protect Momonosuke Kouzuki until the end.

# Aftermath

After Kaido’s fall, Kinemon was joyfully reunited with his wife Tsuru and celebrated with everyone in Kuri.

He later bid farewell to Luffy D. Monkey, Yamato, and others as they left Wano.

Kinemon’s reputation as a smart strategist is sometimes more luck than skill, but his leadership, honor, and courage make others trust and follow him.

He has a hidden talent for attracting “good fortune” and often miraculously survives desperate situations.

He is one of the main heroes of the Wano Country arc, fighting for the promise of dawn in Wano.
