Character Setting

Edit

Allen is the protagonist of the light novel series “HELL MODE: The Hardcore Gamer Dominates in Another World with Garbage Balancing”, a boy born as a serf in a tiny frontier village who secretly possesses the unique and strongest job in the world: Summoner.

Allen is reborn into another world after choosing the Summoner job on a mysterious game-like website.

Despite being officially labeled talentless in his new life, he in fact holds the only Summoner job in existence and plays the world itself like an ultra-hard game.

In his previous life he was Kenichi Yamada, a 35-year-old office worker and obsessive gamer who loved brutal difficulty and endless grinding.

Armed with this mindset, he challenges his new world, which operates under his chosen “Hell Mode” setting, where everything takes 100 times more effort.

His story begins in a nameless developing village called Krena Village, where he grows up as the son of serfs.

From there, he climbs step by step from powerless peasant to key figure in the fight against the Demon King.

Previous Life: Kenichi Yamada

In his original world, Kenichi Yamada was a 35-year-old office worker.

He poured his bonuses and salary into games, effectively living as a heavy-paying user in online and mobile games.

He was especially influenced by the first online game he played, which had deep replay and grind elements.

Because of this, he could no longer feel satisfied with “easy” games and constantly searched for harsher, more extreme systems.

While browsing for yet another ultra-hard game, he discovered a mysterious website.

The site allowed him to choose a “job” in what looked like a character creation screen for a new game-like world.

Initially, he planned to choose the “Demon King” job, attracted by its overwhelming power.

However, he later noticed the “Summoner” job, whose description and potential caught his interest even more, and he selected Summoner instead.

By choosing Summoner on this strange site, Kenichi Yamada’s consciousness was transferred to another world.

He reincarnated with his memories intact and started a new life as Allen.

Reincarnation and Early Life

After reincarnation, Allen was born to Rodan and Theresia, both serfs living in Krena Village.

Despite his low social status, he enjoyed a simple, fulfilling childhood, even playing “sword games” with his friend Krena.

Life took a harsh turn when Rodan suffered a serious injury and could no longer work normally.

With his father badly hurt and his mother pregnant, Allen decided he had to protect his family and earn money, even as a child.

He began actively hunting monsters to support his injured father, his mother Theresia, his younger brother, and the unborn sister.

At this point, he resolved to stop hiding his abilities and to live openly as someone who would use his power to defend his family.

Rise from Serf to Guest of a Noble House

Rodan’s achievements in hunting many monsters eventually drew attention.

For his contribution, he was recognized and appointed as a servant of Butler Von Granvelle of the noble Granvelle family.

Allen thus entered the orbit of the Granvelle household, serving under them as part of his family’s rise from pure serfdom.

During this time, Allen often worked in visible roles, including being assigned to waiting and serving duties thanks to his appearance.

Later, in order to protect Cecil Granvelle, as well as due to Allen’s involvement in negotiating the transfer of mithril mining rights to the king, his status changed.

He was no longer treated as a mere servant, but instead elevated to the position of a guest of the Granvelle family, granting him more freedom and respect.

School Life and Party Formation

Afterward, Allen enrolled in an academy, stepping into a broader stage beyond his small village and the Granvelle estate.

There he gathered and organized a unique party composed of several strong and unusual individuals.

He formed a party jokingly named “Hardcore Gamers”, reflecting his own grinding and min-maxing mentality.

Krena, Dogora, and others became his core teammates, aligning around Allen’s leadership and game-like approach.

As time passed, Allen also brought in additional members with various personal circumstances and backgrounds.

These included Kiel, as well as other-race companions such as Sophiarone, Formar, and Merle, who all joined his effort to defeat the Demon King.

Together, they train, explore, and challenge increasingly dangerous threats, constantly pushing their limits.

Despite their growth, they discover that the Demon King’s power is absurdly beyond normal expectations.

Struggle Against the Demon King

Within the story, the Summoner job is described as the strongest, and Allen’s effort level is extreme.

Even so, when facing the Demon King—who appears as a monstrously powerful existence—Allen and his party are outplayed.

The Demon King takes the initiative and overwhelms them, leading to a crushing defeat despite Allen’s preparation and planning.

This loss highlights just how punishing the world’s “Hell Mode” difficulty truly is.

Allen’s core question becomes whether this world can be “cleared” like a game.

He continues to search for strategies, loopholes, and growth paths that might eventually allow him to conquer this impossibly hard setting.

Allen is deeply family-oriented and caring.

When his father Rodan was seriously injured and his mother Theresia was pregnant, he immediately took it upon himself to hunt monsters and provide for them.

He sees it as his responsibility to protect his younger siblings and his unborn sister, and he acts decisively to ensure their safety.

This protective instinct pushes him to reveal and use his abilities more openly, rather than hiding for fear of social consequences.

He also has a softer side, such as a fondness for sweet foods.

This light, human detail contrasts nicely with his otherwise intense, game-like approach to life.

Strategically, Allen is extremely shrewd and pragmatic.

Even when negotiating with a god, he looks for loopholes in reward systems, alternative forms of compensation, and ways to minimize wasted effort.

He dislikes doing anything that yields no reward and avoids tasks with poor return on investment, very much like a min-max gamer.

If he cannot directly receive a reward, he tries to convert it into other practical benefits for his allies or long-term goals.

In conversations and planning, Allen acts like a player analyzing game systems rather than a typical fantasy protagonist.

He weighs risk and reward, calculates growth, and constantly searches for the most efficient route to victory in his “Hell Mode” world.

Allen is born with black hair and black eyes, giving him a typical East Asian appearance reminiscent of his previous life.

His facial features are attractive, and others frequently describe him as handsome.

Because of his good looks and clean presentation, he was often assigned to service duties in the Granvelle household.

Nobles and guests found him pleasant to look at, enhancing his suitability for roles such as waiting and serving at the manor.

His appearance contrasts with his background as a serf and hardcore grinder.

On the surface, he looks like a refined young man; in reality, he is a relentless, numbers-obsessed Summoner.

Summoner

Allen’s job, Summoner, is rated as a top-tier star 8 class within the world of the story.

It is treated as the highest-rank profession, and Allen is the only known possessor of this job.

One of his signature tools is a special book that he always has with him.

This book has several unique properties and functions that support his Summoner role.

He can view the status of himself and his entire party through this book.

This includes detailed parameters and information, letting him analyze strengths, weaknesses, and growth in a very game-like way.

The book has effectively infinite capacity, allowing Allen to store vast amounts of information.

He can use it to take notes, track monsters, record drops, manage summons, and plan strategies.

However, the book is invisible to ordinary people.

Only Allen and members of his party are able to see and interact with it, making it both secret and tactical.

As a Summoner, Allen can call forth a wide variety of entities, each with specialized roles.

These summons cover offense, defense, support, scouting, and more, forming the backbone of his combat style.

List of Summons and Roles

Insects (Bug-type)

They specialize in area debuff effects.

They weaken enemies over a wide range, making them easier to defeat.

Beasts (Beast-type)

These summons focus on direct physical attacks.

They excel at frontline combat and dealing damage to enemies.

Birds (Bird-type)

Birds are used for scouting and intelligence gathering.

They are ideal for searching areas, tracking foes, and conducting espionage-like activities.

Plants (Grass-type)

Plant summons specialize in healing and recovery.

They provide restorative support to Allen and his party, sustaining them in long battles.

Stones (Stone-type)

Stone summons focus on defense and guarding.

They act as shields, walls, or tanks, protecting allies and holding the line.

Fish (Fish-type)

Fish-type summons provide buff effects.

They enhance the abilities and attributes of Allen and his allies, boosting combat effectiveness.

Spirits (Spirit-type)

Spirits can use language, pass through physical matter, and cast magic.

They combine communication, mobility, and spellcasting, making them extremely versatile.

Dragons (Dragon-type)

Dragon summons wield breath-type special attacks.

These powerful breath techniques can devastate enemies and change the flow of battle.

Angels (Angel-type)

Angel summons are exceptionally powerful, covering offense, buffs, and multiple utility roles.

However, Allen can only summon one Angel at a time, emphasizing their rarity and strength.

By combining these summons, Allen covers nearly every battlefield function through his own job.

His gameplay-like mindset lets him treat them as a customizable “party within a party,” adjusting his lineup to fit each challenge.

Hell Mode

Allen’s world and personal growth are governed by a unique setting called “Hell Mode.”

This is the specific mode he effectively chose when he selected the Summoner job, and it defines his entire growth system.

Under Hell Mode, leveling up takes 100 times longer than it would for a normal person.

Acquiring new skills and increasing skill levels also requires 100 times more experience and effort.

There is no fixed cap to how far he can grow.

His growth has no upper limit, meaning that in theory he can surpass any boundary given enough time and grinding.

The job system includes a special rule: only the skills tied to the job he selected are initially available.

In other words, by choosing Summoner under Hell Mode, Allen gained early access only to skills connected to that job.

Currently, Allen is the only confirmed person operating under this Hell Mode setting.

However, hints in the story suggest that somewhere in this world there is one other individual who also bears the same mode.

Hell Mode is punishing, but it matches Allen’s previous-life preference for games with extreme difficulty and huge grind potential.

He embraces the challenge, turning what would be unbearable for others into his ideal environment.

Allen’s deepest bond is with his family, especially Rodan and Theresia.

Their safety and happiness are the driving forces behind many of his early decisions.

He builds strong connections with his childhood friend Krena, often playing sword-fighting games with her when they were young.

Later, Krena becomes one of his dependable combat allies in the Hardcore Gamers party.

Within the Granvelle household, he forges important ties with Cecil Granvelle.

Protecting Cecil becomes one of the reasons he shifts from mere servant status to being treated as a guest of the noble family.

At the academy and beyond, he forms the party “Hardcore Gamers”, gathering like-minded or uniquely talented individuals.

Key members include Krena, Dogora, and others who fight side by side with him.

Over time, the party expands to include Kiel, Sophiarone, Formar, and Merle, representing multiple races and backgrounds.

Allen acts as the organizer and strategist, coordinating their abilities toward the ultimate goal of defeating the Demon King.

Allen’s name was chosen by his father Rodan.

Rodan named him after a creature known as “Albahelon,” which means something like “the one who freely moves across the sky.”

Ironically, Albahelon ends up being the first monster Allen must fight in this new world.

This makes his name a kind of foreshadowing and a twist of fate, tying his identity to the very creatures he battles.

His love of sweets stands out as a small, endearing trait amidst the grim grind of Hell Mode.

Even when calculating rewards and negotiating with gods, he still enjoys simple pleasures like sugary treats.

Allen’s entire existence is shaped by the concept that “Hell Mode had meaning, and it had to be Hell Mode.”

Only by choosing the hardest possible path can he fully express the hardcore gamer side of Kenichi Yamada in a new world.
