Ango Sakaguchi is an exceptional government agent famous for his sharp intelligence and skill in collecting and analyzing information. He stands out as a complex character in Bungo Stray Dogs, balancing on the edge between friend and foe after being entangled in major events that led to Osamu Dazai’s deep grudge. Ango is cool-headed, always well-dressed, and employs powers that involve reading memories from objects. He is especially notable for his double (even triple) agent activities and for the big part he played in some of the story’s most shocking twists.

Early Career and Undercover Life
Ango climbed quickly in the Ministry of Internal Affairs, becoming deputy councilor.
He once went undercover as the Port Mafia’s exclusive information agent, spying for the intelligence agency.
Triple Spy and Key Relationships
He acted as a triple agent, secretly giving Port Mafia information to his real bosses.
Ango was close friends with Osamu Dazai and Sakunosuke Oda during their mafia days.
He indirectly caused Oda’s death by drawing the group called “Mimic” to Japan under Ōgai Mori’s orders.
Because of this, Dazai holds a grudge against him.
Seeking Redemption
After Dazai left the mafia and Oda died, Ango tried to make up for it.
He used the “Seventh Organization” once to erase Dazai’s criminal history as a way to lessen the guilt he felt for Oda’s death.
Fallen Theory (“Daraku Ron”)
Ango’s special gift is the ability to read “memories” left on things.
He can touch the floor or objects to trace escape routes or learn what happened in the past.
He can even read memories from people or the ground, as Mushitarō Oguri once pointed out.
Ango has two very skilled bodyguards who protect him.
He has a complicated connection to Osamu Dazai filled with regret and guilt, due to their mafia past and Oda’s tragedy.
He helps Atsushi Nakajima and Kyōka Izumi when they get in trouble, showing he still feels responsible.
Undercover Work and Key Events
Ango worked for the Port Mafia as a spy and informed the Special Division (Special Ability Division) of their activities.
He was responsible for bringing “Mimic” into Yokohama, causing a chain of events that led to Oda’s death and Dazai’s defection from the mafia.
Later, he erased Dazai’s criminal records as an act of atonement.
The Three Organizations War
During the war, Ango got involved in a hostage exchange deal with Dazai over Kyōka Izumi.
While doing so, the “Guild” attacked his car, and he was seriously wounded because the airbag didn’t work.
While in the hospital, Dazai offered him a deal for Akiko Yosano’s treatment in exchange for help with Kyōka’s case.
He later arrested Herman Melville and tried to get more information about the "Guild" from him.
Mouse of the House of the Dead Arc
Ango teamed up with Dazai and Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald to capture Fyodor Dostoevsky.
When Mushitarō’s powers were canceled, the "Hunting Dogs" arrested Dazai, and the Agency was framed as terrorists by "Five Deadly Omens."
Ango pretended to chase Mushitarō, Atsushi, and Kyōka, but actually helped protect and guide them based on life signals from Dazai in prison.
He asked Sigma about the location of the “Page,” and was extremely angry when Sigma stabbed the Special Division Chief.
Final Operations and Specials
When Ōchi Fukuchi attempted to launch the “Grand Directive,” Ango followed Dazai’s strategy, petitioning the Prime Minister to only activate it if the vampire army attacked.
He made a deal with a prisoner in Mersault, reducing their sentence in exchange for lowering the central control room’s defenses and using their ability to send messages to Dazai.
Ango sometimes feels wronged when Kyōka Izumi and Lucy Maud Montgomery are kind to Atsushi but are tough on him.
Ango’s ability name, “Fallen Theory,” comes from the essay by the real Ango Sakaguchi, the historical writer he is based on.
