Eru Chitanda

Eru is slightly tall for her age, standing at 160 centimeters.

She has a graceful and neat look, with long black hair down to her shoulders.

Her clear skin and big, sparkling eyes are her most noticeable features.

Eru always dresses properly, giving off the aura of a well-raised girl.

While she looks gentle and calm, her eyes show how lively she is inside.

Eru is very polite, always using respectful language with everyone.

She usually stays calm and speaks gently, but she changes when she finds something interesting.

Eru’s eyes light up and she becomes very curious, often saying, “I’m curious!”

Because of her curiosity, she sometimes draws her friends into mysteries or problems.

Though she asks a lot of questions, she is careful not to bother others or invade their feelings.

She has a strong sense of responsibility as the heiress of the Chitanda family.

Eru can get very worried if she feels lost about her future or duties.

Eru is the only daughter of the wealthy Chitanda family, known as wealthy farmers in Kamiyama City.

Eru joined the Classic Literature Club mainly because of a personal reason: she wanted to remember the past of her uncle, Jun Sekiya, who was club president 33 years ago and went missing in Bengal, India, seven years ago after moving to Malaysia.

She became the club president when she joined because there were no other members at the time.

Being from a respected family, Eru learned social manners and rarely feels shy or nervous.

Eru is a top student and ranks among the best five in her grade.

She is great at cooking and shows her skills at events like the school festival.

Her senses are very sharp—her eyesight is over 2.0, she can see well at night, and her hearing and smell are strong too.

She has a fantastic memory and remembers people’s names easily.

Even with all these skills, she can sometimes be a bit slow to pick up on subtle hints or feelings.

She chose the science stream when moving up a grade, showing her logical way of thinking.

Eru is not good with caffeine or alcohol, getting tipsy easily from things like whiskey chocolates, which once made her giggly and talkative.

Eru addresses Hotaro Oreki as "Oreki-san," Satoshi Fukube as "Fukube-san," and Mayaka Ibara as "Mayaka-san."

She gets along with her friends and often pulls them into club mysteries.

She enjoys matcha (green tea) milk and is weak to both caffeine and alcohol.

She gets drunk easily; once, after eating whiskey chocolates, she became a cheerful drunk and felt sick afterwards.

Her name is written in hiragana, but some think it might actually be two kanji characters, based on another character created by the same author.

She plans to study at a university in the city, but wants to return to Kamiyama after graduation.

Joining the Classic Literature Club

Eru joined the Kamiyama High School Classic Literature Club due to a personal reason connected to her uncle Jun Sekiya.

Solving Mysteries

Eru often notices small, strange things in everyday life and gets very curious about them.

She uses her sharp senses and memory to try to solve these mysteries, but usually asks Hotaro Oreki for help solving the logical parts.

Because of her strong curiosity, she sometimes involves her friends in her quests to find answers.

She tries not to hurt anyone’s feelings during these mysteries, but will push ahead if someone could be harmed.

Family and Responsibility

As the only daughter of the Chitanda family, Eru feels a lot of responsibility for her family’s name and traditions.

When her father told her she didn't have to take over the family, Eru became very confused, feeling lost about her future.

She tries hard to balance her own wishes with what is expected from her by her family.

Growth and Confessions

After the events of Hyouka, Eru begins to open up more, especially to Hotaro.

She shares her worries about her family and future, and quietly asks Hotaro if he would stay with her despite the burdens of her family.

This was a very gentle and distant way of showing her feelings for him.

Eru’s first name spelling is talked about by fans; some think "Eru" might really be two kanji characters.

This idea came from another story by the same author, where a similar character used hiragana for her own reason.
