Rei Todoroki is a supporting character in the series My Hero Academia, known as the wife of Pro Hero Enji Todoroki (Endeavor) and the mother of Toya Todoroki, Fuyumi Todoroki, Natsuo Todoroki, and Shoto Todoroki.

She possesses the ice-based Quirk “Ice” and plays a central role in the emotional history and eventual reconstruction of the Todoroki family.

Rei Todoroki (maiden name: Hyoso) comes from a once-prestigious, old family line that had fallen into economic hardship.

Her marriage to Enji Todoroki was not based on romance but was arranged as a “Quirk marriage,” designed to produce a child who could surpass All Might through the combination of fire and ice.

She has been officially described as age-unknown, though story events strongly imply she is at least in her early forties by the current timeline.

Rei has long white hair and black eyes, giving her a delicate, ethereal appearance that contrasts sharply with the harsh reality of her life.

At a glance, the Todoroki household once looked like a traditional “strict husband and dutiful wife” family.

Behind closed doors, however, the family was collapsing under Enji’s obsession with hero supremacy, Toya’s spiraling mental state, and Rei’s gradual psychological breakdown.

Rei is naturally gentle, empathetic, and considerate, always trying to care for others and accept even unfair circumstances with patience.

At the same time, she historically lacked assertiveness and often chose endurance over confrontation, making her the emotional opposite of the fiercely driven Enji.

As a mother, she loved all four of her children equally and rejected Enji’s tendency to single out Shoto as his “masterpiece.”

Because her own life choices had been constrained by family pressure and tradition, she encouraged her children to ignore the burdens of the household and pursue the lives they truly wanted.

Her famous line to her sons, “You are allowed to become the person you want to be,” captures her deepest wish for them.

Tragically, this same message led Toya and Shoto down completely opposite paths: Toya clung to becoming a hero for his father’s sake, while Shoto used those words to claim his own identity.

Rei’s kindness and quiet resilience made her a vital emotional anchor for Shoto in childhood, even as she herself was being worn down by conflict.

Over time, the constant pressure from Enji, Toya’s instability, and her own guilt and helplessness pushed her into a mental health crisis.

Quirk: Ice

Rei’s Quirk allows her to generate and manipulate ice, just like Shoto’s right side.

Because of her ice-based abilities, she is sensitive to heat and prefers cold environments.

In the series, her Quirk is shown directly only once in a flashback, when she uses ice to cool Shoto’s freshly inflicted burn.

Rei’s ice is also symbolic in the narrative.

To Enji, it represented the missing element needed to create a successor who could withstand his own fiery Quirk, which is why he set his sights on marrying her.

Rei was born into the Hyoso family, a noble lineage with a long history and the weight of tradition.

Despite their status, the family was struggling financially, which made them susceptible to proposals that promised prestige and stability.

Enji Todoroki, obsessed with surpassing All Might, targeted Rei specifically because of her ice Quirk.

He pressured her family into agreeing to a Quirk marriage by leveraging his fame and wealth, making the arrangement difficult for Rei to refuse.

Her relatives, seeing an opportunity to regain status and security, actively supported the marriage.

Rei was caught between Enji’s burning ambition and her own family’s expectations, leaving her with almost no real choice in the matter.

Enji’s first impression of Rei was that she was “strong, yet so fragile she might vanish at a touch, like ice.”

He sensed in her a pain and way of living completely opposite to his own, which only seemed to deepen his fixation on their union as a “solution” to his frustrations.

At first, their married life appeared stable and even peaceful.

However, the cracks began when their eldest son, Toya, was found to be physically unsuited to become a Pro Hero despite having intense flames.

Rei and Enji had four children: Toya, Fuyumi, Natsuo, and Shoto.

While Enji grew increasingly obsessed with molding a perfect successor, Rei tried to be a loving, equal mother to all of them.

When it became clear that Toya’s body could not handle his flames and that his training was endangering his life, Enji began to distance himself from Toya.

From Rei’s perspective, it looked as if Enji was discarding a “failed product,” which horrified her.

Desperate to “save” Toya in his own twisted way and to still create a suitable successor, Enji decided that Rei should have another child.

Rei objected, feeling deep pity for Toya and fearing that having another child for this purpose reduced their children to tools, but she ultimately gave in, believing there was no other way to help Toya.

She then gave birth to Shoto, who inherited both fire and ice.

This decision, made under immense pressure, became another source of guilt and pain for her, especially as Toya spiraled further into obsession and despair.

Rei tried to reach Toya, telling him to think beyond Enji’s expectations and consider whether he truly wanted to be a hero for himself.

She insisted that he was shackled by his father’s ambitions and begged him to look for another path that would not destroy him.

Toya, however, lashed out, accusing her of having agreed to the Quirk marriage in the first place and of “helping to create” him as part of Enji’s project.

His gaze as he blamed her mirrored the later anger Enji would aim at Rei when Toya’s training got out of control.

Rei found herself caught between Enji and Toya, unable to stop either of them.

She realized that Toya’s training could literally cost him his life and begged Enji to intervene, but he dismissed her pleas, further deepening her despair.

Over the years, Rei became emotionally exhausted by the constant tension in the house.

She watched Toya become more unstable, Shoto become the focal point of Enji’s harsh training, and the family atmosphere fall apart.

At one point, Enji discovered the burn scars appearing on Toya’s body due to his reckless training.

Furious that Rei had been unable to stop their son, he lashed out physically and verbally at her, blaming her in almost the same way Toya once did for “creating” this situation.

This double condemnation—from both husband and son—reinforced her sense of guilt and helplessness.

Rei’s mental state deteriorated further, and she became increasingly fragile.

One day, already worn down and traumatized, Rei looked at young Shoto and suddenly saw in him the same eyes as Enji and Toya—eyes filled with the same destructive drive that had shattered their family.

In that moment of terror and confusion, she suffered a breakdown.

Panicking, she grabbed a kettle of boiling water and threw it at Shoto, scalding the left side of his face—the side that had manifested Enji’s fire.

This single traumatic act left Shoto with his infamous burn scar and became the event Rei most deeply regretted.

Enji responded by having Rei forcibly committed to a psychiatric hospital.

Shortly afterward, Rei was informed in the hospital that Toya had died, which completely broke what remained of her emotional stability.

From then on, s
