Early Pirate Days and Meeting Sanji
Zeff was captain of the Cook Pirates and sailed the Grand Line.
After returning, he attacked a passenger ship called the Orbit.
This is where he met a young Sanji.
A terrible storm hit, sinking the ship and leaving Zeff and Sanji stranded on a deserted rock for 85 days.
There was no food—no plants or animals.
Zeff split the last food with Sanji, but kept a bag of treasure for himself, pretending it was food.
He gave Sanji the real food (but didn’t tell him).
To survive, Zeff cut off and ate his own right leg, choosing to keep Sanji alive.
When Sanji asked why Zeff saved him, Zeff shared his dream of finding “All Blue”, the legendary sea with every kind of fish.
He passed his dream onto Sanji.
After they were rescued, Zeff quit being a pirate and built Baratie with his gold.
Sanji became his apprentice, hoping to repay Zeff for saving his life.
Baratie and After
When Monkey D. Luffy and his crew visited Baratie, the restaurant was attacked by the Krieg Pirates, the largest group in East Blue.
With Luffy, Sanji, and the other chefs, Zeff fought to protect Baratie.
During the crisis, Don Krieg demanded Zeff’s precious logbook, but Zeff refused, keeping his pride and bond with his old crew.
After Krieg was finally beaten, Zeff staged a scene to help Sanji accept his dream to travel the seas.
Sanji thanked Zeff with tears and left to join Luffy.
That tearful farewell moved everyone in Baratie to tears—even tough Zeff cried and told Sanji, “Don’t catch a cold.”
When Sanji got his first wanted poster after the Enies Lobby arc, Zeff and the crew laughed at the funny sketch.
Two years after these events, Baratie is still thriving and has even expanded its ship.
Mysteries and Trivia
It’s unknown how Zeff returned from the Grand Line to East Blue, because there is a Calm Belt stopping ships.
It’s possible he only traveled half of the Grand Line.
Even though the Marine Admiral Kizaru says, “the crimes of a pirate never disappear,” Zeff is not hunted by the Marines—maybe because he’s an old retired pirate.
Anime Differences
In the anime, to make it kid-friendly, Zeff loses his leg saving Sanji from falling into the sea (not eating it to survive).
In the Netflix live-action, the original story is kept.
The anime shows Zeff made it as far as Water 7 in the Grand Line.
In “Episode of Luffy,” Zeff’s old wax statue is seen in a museum, showing him with both legs.
