Character Setting

Edit

Nayuta is a major supporting character in the manga series Chainsaw Man, the reincarnation of the Control Devil who now lives as a black‑haired elementary school girl under the care of Denji.

Nayuta is the current Control Devil, reborn after Makima’s death and later entrusted to Denji by Kishibe so she would not grow into another world‑threatening figure.

She first appears briefly in the final chapter of Part 1 and becomes an active character in Part 2, living with Denji, multiple dogs, and the cat Nyako in a cramped apartment.

Nayuta has the appearance of a young girl with braided hair and attends elementary school in Part 2.

Denji describes her relationship to him as something between a friend and a little sister, making their exact bond ambiguous but deeply familial.

Despite her childlike form, Nayuta carries the essence and powers of the Control Devil and possesses an instinctive desire to rule and monopolize what she considers “hers.”

At the same time, her upbringing with Denji has given her more ordinary, human attachments and an energetic, bratty personality.

Nayuta is loud, willful, and extremely confident, acting like a cheeky younger sister who never hesitates to boss Denji around.

Denji calls her a “super problem child with a messed‑up personality,” and the story consistently backs that up.

Originally, when she first appeared in Part 1, she was expressionless and doll‑like, speaking little and acting more like a blank slate.

After living with Denji, she picks up his crude speech patterns, sloppy manners, and cocky attitude, to the point where she is jokingly described as “Denji No.2.”

She displays classic kid behavior: pouting when hungry, throwing mild tantrums, and demanding ice cream as a condition for using her powers.

At school, she shamelessly exploits her ability to control others, ordering classmates to hand over their desserts so she can eat three servings alone.

Nayuta has an extremely possessive streak, especially regarding Denji.

She outright calls Denji “my thing” and reacts with intense jealousy to anyone displaying romantic interest in him.

When she comes home from walking the dogs and sees Yoru (in Asa Mitaka’s body) kissing Denji, she immediately labels Yoru a “thief” and punishes Asa/Yoru by transforming her into a dog.

This possessiveness is so dangerous that one of Denji’s strict household “rules you die if you break” is effectively: “Do not flirt with Denji in front of Nayuta.”

Despite her selfishness and devilish mindset, Nayuta also shows age‑appropriate innocence and vulnerability.

She loves food like pizza and ice cream, cares about school enough to refuse a cosmic request for help because “I have school,” and can be seen clinging to Denji or seeking comfort in his presence.

As a devil born from the concept of control, she fundamentally views humans as things to rule over and shows little concern for the survival of humanity as a whole.

She thinks humans dying is acceptable and is indifferent to her classmates’ lives, even briefly suggesting Denji should side with devils.

Even so, Denji and their pets form the center of her world, and as long as Denji prioritizes her above all else, she is willing to stay nominally on humanity’s side.

She considers human culture both meaningful and constraining: she likes things such as pizza and modern food, but also fantasizes about a world where devils dominate.

She often acts like a tough, bossy little sister, literally slapping Denji’s butt and shouting lines like “Let’s go, Chainsaw Man! Off to hunt devils!” to force him into action.

Yet she also supports him in surprisingly mature ways, coaxing him into becoming a popular hero by promising he will receive more love than from just one girlfriend.

Nayuta possesses the Control Devil’s core power: the ability to dominate and manipulate others.

She can release chains from her fingers that stab into a target’s head, rewriting their brain functions to alter their actions and even their memories.

Through this ability, she can force people to obey orders, turn their behavior into something entirely different, and even impose bizarre perceptions like altering taste.

She also demonstrates the capacity to temporarily transform a person’s “role,” such as turning Asa/Yoru into a dog and later returning her to normal.

Using this control, she can inflict subtle yet devastating modifications, such as making the Worm Devil believe humans taste like excrement.

This trick causes the devil to vomit up the swallowed Denji and Asa, directly saving both of their lives.

Nayuta’s power is not limited to direct combat applications but naturally lends itself to everyday domination.

At school, she casually commands classmates to give up their desserts, effectively running a small dictatorship over the lunch table.

There are hints of a limitation: people already under the prior Control Devil’s influence may be immune to Nayuta’s control.

According to one character, those still under Makima’s old “contract” exist outside Nayuta’s immediate influence, though this detail remains somewhat ambiguous.

She also retains the Control Devil’s heightened sense of smell, allowing her to detect devils and unusual presences from a distance.

She notices Yoru’s presence inside Asa, senses “a bad smell” from her, and can pick up devil signatures far away to guide Denji to fights.

Thanks to Nayuta’s detection abilities, Denji can appear on the scene as Chainsaw Man seemingly out of nowhere, despite having no innate tracking ability himself.

In this way, Nayuta acts as his off‑screen radar and mission control.

After Denji defeats Makima in an unorthodox and gruesome way, he is left with a hollow victory and a fragile peace.

Sometime after this, Kishibe introduces him to a mysterious little girl who suddenly bites his finger, evoking Makima’s presence.

Kishibe explains that this girl is the reincarnated Control Devil, essentially the successor to Makima.

To prevent her from becoming the same kind of existential threat, he entrusts her to Denji, asking him to raise her with genuine care and love.

The girl identifies herself as Nayuta and immediately shows her controlling nature by pointing at Denji and calling him “dog,” echoing Makima’s dynamic.

When Denji asks what she wants to eat, she simply answers “bread,” leading him to call her a “cheap devil” in contrast to Makima’s lavish tastes.

At this stage, Nayuta shows no Malice on Makima’s level and behaves more like a child with a hazy sense of right and wrong.

Pochita had previously explained that the Control Devil longed for an equal relationship – something impossible for a being of pure control – and suggested to Denji that he should “hug her.”

Later, a quiet domestic scene shows Nayuta unconsciously waking up and clinging to Denji in bed like a body pillow.

Denji, in turn, holds her the way he once held Pochita, and Nayuta, feeling safe, drools in her sleep, symbolizing the beginning of a real family bond.

By the end of Part 1, Denji has lost his friends, partner, and crush, but gains a new kind of family in Nayuta, effectively a little sister.

This sets the emotional foundation for their dynamic in Part 2.

At the beginning of Part 2, Nayuta lives with Denji in “Tatsuki Apartments,” the same building where the final battle of Part 1 took place.

She shares the cramped space with Denji, seven dogs, and Nyako, surrounded by small toys, picture books, and their school backpacks.

Her room contains a school backpack that confirms she is attending elementary school, which is later explicitly stated in chapter 131.

Around the room, there are silly details like a chart logging how many times Denji and Nayuta fart in a month, showing how goofy their domestic life has become.

Nayuta is extremely attached to Denji’s daily presence.

She demands his time, complains when hungry, and expects to be prioritized over everything else, including Denji’s love life.

When Denji brings Asa Mitaka home for a date, Nayuta returns from walking the dogs and catches Yoru (controlling Asa’s body) kissing him at the door.

She immediately brands Asa/Yoru a “thief” for “putting spit on my property” and retaliates by transforming Asa into a dog, announced with her single scathing word: “Thief.”

She also notices an eerie “bad smell” from Asa/Yoru, instinctively recognizing the War Devil’s presence and warning Denji about her dangerous nature.

As punishment and leverage, she only agrees to restore Asa’s human form under certain conditions, such as getting ice cream.

When Denji becomes discouraged about being Chainsaw Man after Nayuta disrupts his date, she skillfully manipulates him.

She tells him that if he becomes a popular hero, he’ll get far more love and affection than from a single girlfriend, nudging him back into action.

Later, when Denji and Asa are swallowed by the Worm Devil and nearly killed, Nayuta intervenes from afar.

She partially controls the devil, altering its perception so that “humans taste like crap,” forcing it to vomit and spit out its prey.

Immediately afterward, she meets the Famine Devil, whom she casually recognizes as her “sister,” confirming that the Control, Famine, and other primal concepts are related.

The Famine Devil informs her that humanity’s age may soon end and that an age of devils could be coming.

At first, Nayuta seems unbothered by the idea of a devil‑ruled world.

However, when she learns that such a future would eliminate human foods like pizza, she strongly rejects it and refuses to cooperate.

When the Famine Devil attempts to recruit her, Nayuta turns her down with the hilariously mundane reasoning that she has school.

This refusal shows both her devillike priorities and her attachment to human routines and pleasures.

At school, Nayuta uses her control power to make classmates surrender their desserts so she can eat multiple servings, reveling in this petty tyranny.

In the middle of an ordinary day, a special unit bursts into her classroom and captures her, turning her into a bargaining chip.

Public Safety then uses Nayuta as a hostage in negotiations with Denji, with Hirofumi Yoshida threatening her to force Denji into compliance.

When Nayuta is brought back to Denji under guard, she runs to him, shouting his name, hugs him tightly, and immediately complains that he smells bad – but clearly overjoyed to see him.

She glares at Yoshida with hostility and tells Denji to insult him, demanding that he shout “f*** you” at their captor.

Afterward, the two return home together, with Nayuta acting as though the whole ordeal is an annoying inconvenience rather than a life‑threatening event.

Back at the apartment, Denji dries Nayuta’s hair after her bath, and they talk about the possibility of him quitting as Chainsaw Man to protect their normal life.

Nayuta questions him but does not outright reject his decision, indicating that his happiness and their safety matter more to her than her dream of ruling.

Later that night, when Denji lies awake, depressed about the fake Chainsaw Man and his own role in the world, Nayuta subconsciously comfort him.

Half asleep, she reaches out and gently pats his back, quietly soothing him without a word.

Fire Devil Incident and Capture

When the Fire Devil’s influence results in a proliferation of fake Chainsaw Men and chaos erupts, Denji and Nayuta’s home life comes under attack.

Weapon humans assault their apartment, setting it on fire along with their dogs and Nyako.

Seeing his last sanctuary and family threatened, Denji mentally snaps and declares what sounds very much like a permanent breakup with his old life, including Nayuta.

Nayuta is stunned into shock as Denji, overwhelmed by trauma, distances himself emotionally in a desperate attempt to keep her from getting hurt.

However, as the situation escalates and an enraged crowd threatens Denji, Nayuta acts decisively despite her fear and heartbreak.

She uses her control ability to manipulate the surrounding civilians, creating an opening and helping Denji esca
