Hatchan is a male fish-man character in ONE PIECE, who used to be an officer in the Arlong Pirates and is now the owner of a takoyaki shop called "Takoyaki 8". He is known for his six swords style, friendly but goofy personality, and a sense of guilt about his past. His journey involves leaving the sea for a peaceful life, helping Luffy’s crew, and enduring many fights. Although strong and interesting, he’s best remembered for his kindness and his love for making takoyaki.
Hatchan is a large octopus-type fish-man.
He has six arms, each with suction cups, and a mouth that sticks out like an octopus.
His height is 220cm.
He is 38 years old.
His blood type is S.
His birthday is August 8th (which is also "Takoyaki Day").
His zodiac sign is Leo.
Hatchan is bright, gentle, and a little airheaded.
Even while being part of the Arlong Pirates, he never hated humans and tried to be friendly.
He is very trusting, sometimes to a fault, as seen when he welcomed Zoro Roronoa, thinking he was an ally.
Nami said he was "harmless".
He feels strong guilt for helping Arlong, especially towards Nami.
He is also quite smart in business, looking after customers and warning people not to cheat visitors.
After his pirate life, he becomes even kinder and more helpful, often supporting Luffy's crew.
Hatchan was born in Fish-Man District, Ryugu Kingdom, in the Grand Line.
His best friends since childhood are Kuroobi and Chuu.
He started as a member of the Sun Pirates led by Fisher Tiger.
After Fisher Tiger’s death, he followed Arlong when the crew split up.
Together, they moved to East Blue to build "Fish-Man Empire", using Cocoyashi Village as their base.
After defeat by the Straw Hats, he was arrested by the Marines, but he escaped and opened a takoyaki stand.
As a fish-man, Hatchan has great physical strength and can catch huge octopuses bare-handed.
He’s a six-sword user, swinging six swords using all his arms, which makes his sword skills top class on Fish-Man Island (only second to Hyouzou, once).
Each sword weighs about 300kg, and he uses them for special moves like "Six-Sword Waltz".
Because he’s part octopus, he can shoot black ink from his mouth and stick to walls with his suction cups.
He also seems able to talk to sea creatures.
Hatchan is also amazing at cooking, especially takoyaki, earning high praise from Sanji.
Most of his attack moves are showy but often end up being less effective than he hopes.
Examples of his skills:
- Takohachi Black (shooting ink to blind enemies)
- Takoyaki Punch (six punches at once)
- Six Sword Waltz (spins all swords like a fan)
- Triple Sword Catch (tries to catch all enemy blades, but fails)
Hatchan's longest friends are Kuroobi and Chuu from his childhood.
He cares about Nami, feeling guilty for what happened to her, and helps her later.
He was once guided by Rayleigh Silvers, who he saved when lost at sea as a boy.
He is friendly with Camie the mermaid and Pappug the starfish, meeting them while hiding from the Marines.
He once trained with Hyouzou at a dojo, but never beat him.
He had a crush on a female octopus fish-man called Octopako.
“I am Fish-Man Island’s number two swordsman—Six Sword Hatchan!”
“You humans could never beat me, no matter what!"
"As long as Arlong’s will lives here, I can’t face those guys!”
The Sun Pirates and Arlong Pirates
Hatchan was a kind member of the Sun Pirates and treated Koala, a human slave, kindly.
After Fisher Tiger died, misunderstandings grew in the crew.
Hatchan, Kuroobi, and Chuu joined Arlong when he left the Sun Pirates.
The Arlong Park Arc
In East Blue, Hatchan helps Arlong take over Cocoyashi Village and force Nami to work for the crew.
He fights Zoro Roronoa, showing off his six-sword skills, but is defeated when all his swords are broken.
Though badly hurt, he tries to help Luffy D. Monkey and is stopped again.
He’s finally arrested by the Marines.
Escape & Takoyaki Shop
While being shipped away, Hatchan escapes into the sea.
He meets Camie and Pappug, and after many troubles, finds his dream of running a takoyaki stand.
He leaves the pirate life and opens "Takoyaki 8" as his shop.
Sabaody Archipelago Incident
Hatchan helps Luffy’s crew move around Sabaody Archipelago.
He also helps them find a ship-coating craftsman for their journey.
Hatchan is shot and badly hurt by Saint Charloss when trying to stop the slave auction.
He is taken care of by Rayleigh Silvers.
After the Time Skip
For two years while Luffy’s crew is missing, Hatchan and the Flying Fish Riders guard the Thousand Sunny ship.
He gets hurt by protecting the ship and goes back to Fish-Man Island to heal.
Fish-Man Island Arc
Hatchan tries to stop Hody Jones and Vander Decken IX who want to overthrow the Ryugu Kingdom.
He’s attacked for wanting friendship with humans and is left with serious injuries.
The Straw Hats rescue him.
He helps Luffy’s group as they leave Fish-Man Island.
- His real name is Hatchan, but his friends call him Hachi.
- The creator, Eiichiro Oda, said his name is like a Chinese "Chan" nickname.
- Hatchan's early design was a female squid swordsman named "Maple Reed".
- He is shown using ‘ore’ (kanji for "I/me") in speech once, though usually says 'ore' in hiragana.
- Hatchan once liked a girl named Octopako but was dumped after she said his takoyaki was bad.
- He once helped Rayleigh as a boy, which is why he trusts some humans.
- He was never racist towards humans, unlike most Arlong Pirates.
Hatchan did not appear in the live-action series (season 1) because his six arms are hard to make look real.
He is now probably the top swordsman on Fish-Man Island, since Hyouzou is no longer active.
