Kanuka Clancy

Kanuka Clancy is a third-generation Japanese American officer sent from the New York City Police Department to Special Vehicles Section 2 for a six-month training assignment.

She serves as the backup and command officer for Unit 2, effectively stepping in because Mikiyasu Shinshi is unable to rein in Isao Ohta's reckless behavior.

Although primarily assigned to support and command duties, she can also pilot a Labor herself in emergencies.

Her operating skill is portrayed as extremely high.

She is cool-headed and realistic on the surface, and often comes across as the sensible one.

At her core, however, she shares the same aggressive, hot-blooded temperament as Ohta, which is why the two reportedly get along surprisingly well.

Kanuka is from Honolulu, Hawaii, United States.

She holds a rank equivalent to sergeant.

She graduated at the top of her class from the New York Police Academy.

While serving in the special investigations division, she also attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a non-degree student and completed a master's-level course in electronic engineering.

Officially, she was dispatched to Japan for training.

In reality, the New York City Police Department had become unable to control the consequences of her extreme destructive tactics, making the assignment something close to an unofficial exile.

Her harsh attitude toward criminals is implied to stem from childhood trauma.

When she was young, her parents were shot to death, and this loss appears to have shaped her violent approach to law enforcement.

In the manga, she appears under a different setup.

There, she comes to Japan as a detective from the New York City Police Department investigating child trafficking and is not assigned to Section 2.

The manga also shows her grandmother in her private life.

A flashback depicts young Kanuka screaming as her parents, caught in some kind of incident, are carried away in an emergency vehicle.

Kanuka is portrayed as an exceptionally accomplished and versatile officer.

She is both academically gifted and physically formidable.

Her qualifications include fourth-dan judo, third-dan aikido, and instructor certification in the Urasenke school of tea ceremony.

She is also highly skilled in firearms and bomb disposal.

She excels in sports in general.

She is fluent in English, Japanese, German, French, Dutch, and Mandarin Chinese.

Her hobbies include horseback riding and Go.

She is also a notably heavy drinker.

In the newer OVA series, she becomes so absorbed in an argument with Kumagami while drinking that she even drinks Noa Izumi under the table.

This scene further emphasizes both her competitive streak and her tolerance for alcohol.

Kanuka is often described as a capable, cultured, and sensible woman.

At the same time, she is fundamentally a battle-loving hothead cut from the same cloth as Ohta.

Compared with Ohta, she is mentally more mature and usually ends up scolding him.

As Asuma Shinohara puts it, Ohta is effectively under Kanuka's thumb.

This contrast is one of her defining charms.

She looks like the composed professional, but underneath that polished exterior is someone just as eager for direct action as the most reckless members of the team.

Kanuka's preferred sidearm is the Colt Government M1911A1.

She openly carries it in Japan.

The weapon was brought into the country through Yokota Air Base, which made its import possible in practice.

Even so, Captain Kiichi Gotō dryly remarks that it is, needless to say, an illegal firearm under Japanese weapons law.

In the theatrical film version, she uses an AutoMag.

Her television anime version is also known for driving a pink Porsche 911 Targa.

Kanuka joins Section 2 as a temporary outsider with elite credentials and a strong personality.

Her arrival changes the team dynamic, especially around Ohta and Shinshi.

She serves as both a disciplinarian and an enabler of Unit 2's aggressive tendencies.

Because she can understand Ohta's mindset better than most, she is one of the few people who can direct him at all.

Her presence adds an international angle to the cast.

She also embodies the contrast between polished professionalism and barely restrained destructive zeal.

In early character designs, Kanuka wore glasses in some versions.

Her hairstyle was also originally more foreign-looking, including long hair or loose waves.

These ideas were later changed to her final design because of director preference.

According to Yutaka Takada, if Kanuka's original design had been used, the resulting character differentiation might have led to Shinobu Nagumo becoming a very different character.

In the anime, Kanuka Clancy is voiced by You Inoue.
