Mejiro Bright in Real Life
The real Mejiro Bright was a chestnut male racehorse born from Mejiro Ryan (father).
He had little speed at the start but huge stamina, making him perfect for long races.
His racing style was called “zu-bu” in Japanese, meaning he was slow to start but strong at the end.
He was often underestimated because his first win happened in a very slow race.
However, he showed great strength by overtaking all other horses in a long finishing push.
He won two early major races, then was the favorite for the classic triple crown races (Satsuki Sho, Japanese Derby, and Kikuka Sho).
Even though he didn’t win the Satsuki Sho or Derby, he finished 3rd or 4th but remained popular.
The Mejiro family hoped Bright would bring them back to glory after famous horses like Mejiro McQueen and Mejiro Ryan had retired.
He brought hope by winning the Stayers Stakes with a huge lead and finally won the Spring Tennou-sho (Emperor’s Cup), a big dream for the Mejiro family.
Even after this, winning was tough for Bright.
He kept running strong but didn’t always have enough speed to catch the leaders before the finish line.
He finally retired because of a tendon injury after 25 races with 8 wins and 8 seconds.
Bright was kind but could be fierce if angered, even biting other horses after becoming a stallion.
