Chinatsu Yoshikawa is a 13-year-old first-year student who stands out with her fluffy pink twin tails, held up by bright red ribbons. She goes by the nickname "Chii-na," a name given by her friends that she grew to love. Chinatsu is cute, cheerful, and wants to appear mature, but she is easily embarrassed and sometimes hides her mistakes. She idolizes Yui Funami and tries her best to get closer to her, often with funny or awkward results. Chinatsu has a sister named Tomoko Yoshikawa and joins the Amusement Club after her first club choice, the Tea Ceremony Club, is closed. Although she is considered one of the most feminine girls in the series, Chinatsu’s odd art skills and her funny mix of innocence and dark ideas make her a memorable character in YuruYuri.
Chinatsu has fluffy, voluminous pink hair tied into twin tails with large red ribbons.
Her eyes are also pink.
She is 149 cm tall.
Her everyday look is cute and stands out, and if she unties her twin tails, her hair is surprisingly short.
Chinatsu often wears a cat-themed kigurumi (costume pajama) at home.
Chinatsu is known as a girly girl, perhaps the most feminine among her friends.
She tries hard to be responsible and mature, but often fails to admit mistakes and acts clumsy to cover them up.
At first, she comes off as a bit shy and sometimes thinks things are worse than they really are.
She can seem a little dark or sneaky, especially when it comes to getting close to Yui, but she is actually straightforward and honest most of the time.
Chinatsu is easily surprised, hates having her routine broken, and gets scared by horror movies, even though her own art often turns out creepy without her noticing!
Chinatsu is a first-year student in Class 2 and is 13 years old.
Her birthday is November 6, making her a Scorpio.
She is part of the Amusement Club and has an older sister named Tomoko Yoshikawa, who was in the Tea Ceremony Club.
Originally, Chinatsu wanted to join the Tea Ceremony Club, but found out it was closed.
She was drawn into joining the Amusement Club when Kyōko Toshinō found her looking like the anime character Mirakurun.
Her favorite things are Yui Funami and sweet foods, while she hates subjects like geography and social studies.
Her blood type is AB.
Chinatsu is terrible at drawing, sculpting, and other artistic things, yet she thinks she is talented at them.
When she shows her work, her friends are often shocked or even scared by how strange it looks.
She has no sense of horror in her art and is surprised when people react badly.
Her best subject in school is anything except geography and social studies.
Chinatsu also loves making tea, thanks to her sister’s influence, and tries to serve it carefully every day.
- Yui Funami: Chinatsu admires Yui deeply and tries her best to get closer to her, sometimes making bold love advances.
- Kyōko Toshinō: Kyōko pulls Chinatsu into the Amusement Club and makes her dress up as Mirakurun. While Chinatsu is often annoyed by Kyōko, she sometimes shows affection too.
- Akari Akaza: Akari is Chinatsu’s classmate and a good friend. Akari is also someone Chinatsu talks to about her feelings for Yui.
- Tomoko Yoshikawa: Her older sister, who inspired Chinatsu to become interested in the tea ceremony.
Chinatsu is called "Chinatsu-chan" by Akari, Kyōko, Yui, Sakurako Ohmuro, Rise Matsumoto, and Akane Akaza.
Ayano Sugiura, Chitose Ikeda, and Himawari Furutani call her "Yoshikawa-san."
Her sister calls her "Chinatsu."
Tea Ceremony Club and Amusement Club
Chinatsu wanted to join the Tea Ceremony Club, just like her sister Tomoko Yoshikawa.
However, she found out the club had closed.
When she went to the club room, Kyōko Toshinō noticed her because she looked like Mirakurun, a character from an anime, and quickly convinced her to join the Amusement Club instead.
Friendship and Romantic Feelings
At first, Chinatsu was scared of Kyōko, but Yui Funami protected her and quickly became her hero.
Chinatsu’s admiration for Yui grew into a crush, and after that, she started following Yui around and tried hard to be close to her.
She has even wanted to know everything about Yui, right down to her preferences and underwear, and once practiced kissing with Akari after saying she would like to kiss Yui.
Chinatsu sometimes clings to Yui to avoid Kyōko’s advances, but sometimes she is sweet to Kyōko too.
Art Skills and School Life
Chinatsu’s drawings, clay and knitted works, and even cooking (in the anime) are considered bizarre and scary by everyone, though she is totally unaware.
Once, a girl asked Chinatsu to help her draw, but was left horrified after seeing her art.
Despite this, Chinatsu is confident and even believes she could be a "technician" thanks to her sister’s praise.
She especially likes her nickname "Chii-na," given by Akari Akaza, and uses it as a kind of catchphrase.
Childhood Memories
There is a story that when they were younger, Chinatsu tried to drive Yui and her friends out of the park and argued with them.
She once took Kyōko captive during their fight.
Later in the series, Chinatsu dreams about her childhood and worries she was a bully, but Akari tells her she likes any version of Chinatsu, which makes her feel better.
Popularity and Reception
In the second volume of the original manga, it is noted that Chinatsu ranked lowest in a popularity vote.
She often tries to get closer to Yui, but sometimes makes mistakes or embarrasses herself.
In the anime, Rumi Ōkubo, the voice actress, said that Chinatsu’s actions are “not-so-soft yuri.”
- Chinatsu hates to have her pace disturbed and gets upset if surprised by things like hair accessories suddenly ending up in her hair.
- She sometimes screams strangely when something odd happens to her hair, which is shown in the anime with a surreal animation.
- Chinatsu does not realize her own works are scary, and is confident when showing them.
- She shares traits with other characters: like Ayano Sugiura, she can't act honest with Kyōko; like Chitose Ikeda, she has wild fantasies; like Sakurako Ohmuro, she misunderstands things and gets jealous; and like Himawari Furutani, she is weak but can be strong when emotional, and suffers from being around more boisterous friends.
- In earlier versions of the story, Chinatsu was meant to be Akari's neighbor, but now they are just classmates who wanted to be closer friends.
"Yui-senpai~!"
"Tch, if I act humble, she just takes advantage…."
Chinatsu appears in the last episode of "YuruYuri Saisho no HouR."
She is the only one whose personality has not changed from the earlier days of the series.
The original setting of being neighbors with Akari was dropped later, and now they are classmates who have always wanted to talk to each other.
