Character Setting

Edit

Kanne is a third-class mage from the series Frieren, specializing in water-manipulation magic and known for her timid personality, explosive outbursts, and combative yet close relationship with her childhood friend Lawine.

Kanne is a female third-class mage who participates as a candidate in the First-Class Mage Exam held in the magic city of Oisarts.

She is visually distinctive for her revealing fashion style, often wearing a bare-midriff top and short pants.

She is a childhood friend and schoolmate of Lawine, and the two share a long, loud history of bickering and teamwork.

Although Kanne is naturally timid, she is described as someone who grows stronger when praised and encouraged.

In the First Test of the First-Class Mage Exam, she belongs to Party 2 alongside Lawine and Frieren.

Despite frequently claiming to dislike Lawine because of their constant fights, she also recognizes that Lawine is the one who pulls her forward and forces her to act.

Kanne’s most famous line captures her volatile temper under pressure:

“I’m not kidding! I’ll kill you!”

Kanne is fundamentally cowardly and easily frightened, especially when facing overwhelming opponents or pressure.

However, she has a strong desire to prove herself and becomes noticeably more competent and confident when others acknowledge her abilities.

Her dynamic with Lawine is central to her characterization.

The two quarrel constantly, trading snarky remarks and provocation in almost every interaction.

Kanne often makes an unnecessary or tactless comment that sets Lawine off.

In response, Lawine typically tackles her, sits on top of her, and yanks her hair as “punishment,” leading Kanne to scream things like, “It hurts, it hurts, it’s going to come off!”

Despite the comedic violence, Kanne clearly trusts Lawine deeply.

She relies on Lawine’s initiative and considers her a crucial partner who drags her into action when she would otherwise hesitate.

Their arguments are so frequent that onlookers joke about it, likening observers to a grandmother watching her grandchildren fight or exclaiming, “They’re at it again!”

This recurring gag emphasizes both their closeness and their chaotic rapport.

Water-Manipulation Magic: Riemstrowa

Kanne specializes in a water-manipulation spell known as Riemstrowa, which allows her to control existing bodies of water.

A key limitation of this magic is that she cannot create water herself, so she requires a water source or a naturally wet environment to use it.

Because she cannot generate water, Kanne is significantly restricted in dry environments or enclosed areas without water.

However, this limitation flips into an enormous advantage in locations where water is plentiful, especially during rainfall.

Combat Performance and Limitations

When rain is falling, Kanne’s combat potential increases dramatically.

Under such conditions, she can manipulate the surrounding water with extraordinary precision and power, making her capable of defeating even higher-ranked mages in a single decisive strike.

During the First-Class Mage Exam, when Frieren breaks a barrier in the trial, rain begins to fall over the battlefield.

Kanne uses this opportunity to unleash the full power of Riemstrowa and successfully defeats Richter in battle, fighting alongside Lawine against Denken’s Party 13.

Despite the fact that roughly 60% of the human body is water, Kanne cannot manipulate the water inside living bodies.

She is unable to form a clear mental image of how water is distributed within the body or how to extract it without a concrete conceptual structure, so Riemstrowa cannot be applied directly to people.

Similarly, Lawine can conjure ice arrows and other ice constructs through her own magic.

However, these are magical constructs that either vanish once their role is finished or are mentally classified by Kanne as “ice, not water,” making it impossible for her to simply melt Lawine’s ice to create usable water in combat.

First Test

In the First Test, Kanne is assigned to Party 2 with Frieren and Lawine.

Here, she begins to show both her anxiety under pressure and her potential when properly supported by her allies.

Her synergy with Lawine becomes especially clear when they fight Richter.

With Frieren’s actions causing rain to fall by breaking the exam barrier, Kanne gains access to a vast amount of water and uses Riemstrowa at full strength.

Kanne and Lawine together manage to subdue Richter, displaying effective teamwork despite their constant bickering.

This battle is one of the most prominent showcases of Kanne’s true strength under ideal conditions.

Second Test

During the Second Test, Kanne and Lawine are no longer together as a functioning pair to the end.

Lawine ends up failing this stage of the exam.

Kanne, however, manages to pass the Second Test successfully.

Her survival and advancement underscore that she has real talent and endurance even without Lawine at her side.

Third Test and Failure

In the Third Test, the legendary mage Serie serves as the examiner.

Here, Kanne’s core weakness – fear – becomes critical.

When confronted with Serie’s overwhelming magical power, Kanne is overtaken by fear.

More importantly, this fear crystallizes into a belief, an “image,” that she cannot become a First-Class Mage.

Serie, who values mental image and conviction as much as raw skill, judges Kanne accordingly.

She is explicitly told she has failed the Third Test and is denied promotion to First-Class Mage due to this inner conviction of her own limits.

This failure is not due to a lack of magical talent but to the psychological hurdle that Kanne cannot overcome in that moment.

Her arc in the exam highlights both her impressive potential and the internal barrier that keeps her from the highest rank.

The name Kanne comes from the German word “Kanne,” which means “water jug” or “pitcher.”

This is a direct nod to her specialty in manipulating water, thematically tying her identity and her magic together.

Kanne is voiced by voice actress Azumi Waki in adaptations of Frieren.

Her voice performance emphasizes both Kanne’s nervous, hesitant side and her sudden, explosive anger when pushed too far.

Her most memorable outbursts, like screaming threats in battle or protesting Lawine’s hair-pulling punishments, contribute heavily to her comedic and emotional impact in the story.
