Clara Magnolia is a female character in Kana Akatsuki’s novel series Violet Evergarden, known as the head of the Magnolia family and the terminally ill mother of Anne Magnolia.
Clara Magnolia appears in episode 10 of the television anime Violet Evergarden and in the 2020 film Violet Evergarden: the Movie.
She is depicted as a young woman suffering from an incurable illness so severe that she requires caregiving.
Clara is Anne Magnolia’s mother.
She serves as the head of the Magnolia family, a role that contrasts sharply with her declining health.
Knowing her time is limited, Clara contacts the C.H. Postal Company to request the dispatch of an Auto Memories Doll.
Her goal is to leave birthday messages for Anne, who will be left behind at the age of seven.
Clara meets Violet Evergarden through this request and commissions her to ghostwrite 50 letters, delivered at a pace of one letter per year starting from Anne’s eighth birthday.
The work takes time away from Anne’s remaining days with her mother, creating a painful tradeoff.
At first, Anne resents Violet for “stealing” time that should have belonged to her mother.
As Violet spends time with her, Anne gradually warms up to Violet and begins to grow attached.
After Violet completes the contract, Clara and Anne return to life as a pair.
Before long, Clara dies, and Anne begins receiving a birthday letter each year from her late mother.
After Anne’s death, Anne’s great-granddaughter Daisy learns that Clara—who died young—had once asked a young woman named Violet Evergarden, an Auto Memories Doll, to write letters for Anne.
Moved by this discovery, Daisy travels to Leiden, where the C.H. Postal Company once operated, to trace that connection.
Clara Magnolia is voiced by Ayako Kawasumi.
