Jorogumo is a unique character who appears in episode seven as an original addition to the series. She stands out from other monsters because she does not focus on Hyakkimaru. Her most striking trait is her ability to change from a giant spider into a human woman and her struggle between following her nature and showing real kindness to humans. Jorogumo's story centers on her meeting with Hyakkimaru and Dororo, and how her connection with Yajiro changes her fate.
Jorogumo has the top half of her body resembling a human woman, but she is actually a huge spider monster.
She can transform into a regular-looking woman to hide her true form.
When she is wounded, she looks thin and weak.
Jorogumo is clever and can have normal conversations.
She is calm and has some kindness, but she has to take human life energy to survive.
Even though she needs human energy, she only takes just enough so her victims do not die.
When she meets someone who treats her with kindness, she becomes less willing to harm people.
Jorogumo can change from a spider monster to look exactly like a human woman.
She can suck life energy from men and make them very weak.
She is strong and smart enough to make her own choices about who she hurts.
Jorogumo meets Hyakkimaru and Dororo when they find her hiding in the forest.
After being hurt, she is saved by Yajiro, a man who helps people escape danger.
Yajiro calls her "Ohagi" because he finds her near some bush clover flowers.
First Encounter in the Forest
Jorogumo is found by Hyakkimaru and Dororo in the forest.
She is badly hurt from an earlier fight and is weak while pretending to look human.
Saved by Yajiro
Yajiro, a kind man known for helping others escape, finds Jorogumo almost fainted under some flowers.
He calls her "Ohagi" and makes her feel safe, so she does not want to hurt him.
Struggle Between Hunger and Kindness
Because she cares for Yajiro, Jorogumo cannot bring herself to take his life energy, even though she is starving.
They decide to escape the village together with Yajiro’s help.
Attack and Final Decision
While they are trying to leave, Hyakkimaru and some samurai who hunt escapees catch up to them.
Jorogumo fights but, moved by Yajiro’s words, she loses her anger and stops fighting.
Hyakkimaru now sees her as a friend and lets her go free.
Jorogumo is not one of the Twelve-Body Demon Gods.
She only eats a small part of people’s energy, never enough to kill.
Her human form is so good that people cannot easily tell she is really a spider monster.
