Espiral Rotation is a Western assassin hired by Ishizu Deian to defeat Kenshin Himura. He is a master of the Destornijador saber technique, which utilizes a sword forged in a spiral shape to stab like a drill. Espiral Rotation is also known for demanding extremely high compensation for his services. His first name, "Espiral," means "spiral" in Spanish, and his surname, "Rotation," means "rotation."
He challenges Kenshin Himura with a thrust so powerful that it can shatter a moving carriage in a single blow. However, he is unable to keep up with the speed of the Hiten Mitsurugi-ryu and is easily defeated by the Ryu Tsui Sen technique. Afterwards, he is taken to his own country to face justice together with the Western merchant who had been conspiring with Ishizu Deian.
In the second anime adaptation, Espiral Rotation is portrayed with more nuance: he apologizes for taking Elder hostage as a means to lure Kenshin Himura. Also, the original manga scene where Elder catches a bottle filled with smallpox bacteria, which was thrown by Ishizu Deian, is changed in the anime: Espiral Rotation himself stops the bottle, declaring, “Don’t disgrace my defeat any further!” Subsequently, he is inspired by Kenshin Himura, changes the form of his beloved sword, and takes up the role of bodyguard for Elder as she sets out to travel to a foreign country.
