Character Setting

Edit

Gabby is a female Tamer from the Kagemori family in Daemons of the Shadow Realm, a small, braid-haired girl in a red hoodie whose brutal combat style and hints of a tragic past make her one of the series’ most striking figures.

Gabby took part in the mission to attack East Village.

She is described as a blonde girl wearing a red hoodie.

She is staying with the Kagemori family.

Jin and the Kurotani siblings call her “Gabby” or “Ms. Gabby,” suggesting that “Gabby” may be her actual name.

Her voice actor is Misaki Kuno.

As of volume 3 of the collected edition, her real name has not been revealed.

Gabby belongs to the Kagemori family as a Tamer.

She usually wears hooded clothes and has braided hair.

Although she looks very young, she claims to be older than Yuru.

She possesses a highly combat-oriented daemon and is extremely resistant to pain.

She shows no hesitation about killing.

At the same time, she follows a personal rule of never hurting children, even if they are enemies.

That policy appears to be tied to her own past and Asa’s circumstances.

Her remark that she is “used to pain” strongly suggests a miserable background.

Her lack of hesitation during the attack on East Village may also have a specific reason.

It may be because the people there had been treating Asa cruelly.

Gabby is ruthless in battle, but she is not heartless.

She has deep affection for the daemon she has contracted with.

When a group that attacked the Kagemori family was captured, one of the prisoners treated daemons like livestock.

In response, Gabby threatened the person by making it look as if she would crush his head with her contracted daemon.

This shows how strongly she despises people who look down on daemons or treat them carelessly.

Her fierce protectiveness gives her a surprisingly tender side beneath her violent image.

At the Kagemori household, she gets along especially well with Asa.

The two often act together.

Gabby and Asa also work as assistants for Hikaru, the eldest son of the Kagemori family, who is a manga artist.

She is very fond of his manga.

Her reason is simple and very revealing.

She likes it because it is “a happy story where no bad people appear.”

That line says a lot about her values.

It suggests that peace and kindness are things she treasures deeply, perhaps because she has seen too much cruelty.

Gabby’s fighting style is built for direct and overwhelming violence.

She can withstand pain well and remains calm in lethal situations.

One especially memorable feature is her attack cue.

She makes a biting gesture with one hand and says “gabu,” and the target is severed.

It is unclear whether this is an innate property of her daemon or a personal signal agreed upon between them.

Either way, it makes her attacks feel frighteningly casual.

Gabby’s contracted daemon is Gabriel.

The character is voiced by Ayumu Murase.

Gabriel appears as a pair of upper and lower jaws covered with countless eyes.

In normal times it is small, but in battle it can grow large enough to swallow a human whole.

Its bite is strong enough to tear apart ordinary daemons with ease.

Its teeth can also withstand direct hits from bullets and even hand grenades.

Because Gabriel is only a set of jaws, severed body parts are not eaten and remain where they fall.

That makes its attacks even more unsettling.

Gabriel’s individual names are absurdly long.

They are Joe William Frederick Gabriel I and Kirk Douglas Waldgrave Gabriel II.

The author had not originally decided Gabby’s color scheme.

However, when a linked tankobon promotion produced a T-shirt, a completed color reference somehow already existed.

According to the author, the reaction was essentially, “If everyone thinks that, then sure, let’s go with it!”

That color scheme then became the official one.

The commentary jokingly blames “that guy” for it.

Later, Gabby appeared together with that very person on an advertising poster inside a train station.
