Cartaphilus exploits Matthew’s fear of Mina’s illness.

He convinces Matthew that a special elixir could save her life.

To create this elixir, Matthew is persuaded to kill many cats in Ulthar.

He believes the cruelty is justified if it means saving Mina.

The Elixir and Mina’s Death

Matthew completes the elixir, hoping it will heal Mina.

Instead, when Mina drinks it, she dies.

In his deranged state, he attempts to hunt and kill even more cats.

Before he can continue his rampage, Tim and his companions confront and kill him.

Matthew’s story does not end with his physical death.

His soul absorbs the wrath and grudges of the cats he had slaughtered.

This twisted fusion of spirit and resentment transforms him into the entity known as the “Stagnation of Ulthar.”
