Character Setting

Edit

Boogiepop is a mysterious alternate personality of Touka Miyashita who appears whenever there is a danger threatening the world. She is known as the "Reaper" and the "Enemy of the World's Enemy," and is feared for her ability to deal with supernatural threats and fix situations where normal people would be helpless. Her signature appearance and chilling reputation make her one of the most intriguing urban legends among high school girls.

Appearance

Boogiepop dresses in a unique way, always wearing a hat that looks like a cylinder and a cloak.

These items were inspired by Scarecrow, an artificial human she met when she first appeared.

People often mention her strange facial expressions, where she smiles on one side and shows a different feeling on the other side.

Personality

She calls herself "boku" (a boyish form of "I" in Japanese) and comes across as calm and logical.

Even though she rarely shows real emotion, she is not cold.

Boogiepop sometimes acts with kindness, such as giving someone a sketchbook or making comforting choices for others.

She is known for not being tied down by personal troubles and focuses only on the job of "removing threats."

She claims she has never lied, but there have been times when she said things that weren’t true to protect someone or keep a promise.

Background

Boogiepop first appeared when middle schooler Touka Miyashita found Scarecrow, an artificial human, badly hurt.

After meeting him, she began using his hat and cloak.

Her name, "Boogiepop," comes from how she pops up only when danger threatens the world—just like bubbles rising from underwater.

Abilities

Boogiepop is an incredible fighter who uses special steel wires as her weapon.

Enemies are often defeated and cut apart by her wires.

She beats people or synthetic beings even at the peak of their strength.

Boogiepop is often not affected by abilities that would work on normal humans, especially mind attacks.

She can move faster than the speed of sound and has ended mind control just by briefly stopping an enemy's heart.

She can also move wills from one object to another, a feat considered impossible by many.

Boogiepop is also skilled at entering other people’s dreams.

In fights, she prefers using psychology—finding and attacking mental weaknesses—over brute force.

Sometimes, her strategy leads to her enemies reflecting and changing instead of being destroyed.

Relationships

Keiji Takeda thought of Boogiepop as a "transformation hero" at first.

With Nagi Kirima, there is a suggestion that Boogiepop herself is a special possibility and could even be the same kind of being as the threats she stops.

Trivia

Boogiepop is famous for whistling songs when she appears—mostly Wagner’s 'The Mastersingers of Nuremberg' but also 'Atom Heart Mother' by Pink Floyd.

Among girls at her high school, she is an urban legend or even rumored to be an assassin who "kills people when they are at their most beautiful to stop them from getting worse."

In staff comments from Boogiepop Phantom, it’s hinted that she sometimes bends the truth to be kind.

She broke a promise with Fortissimo and was once called a "big liar."

Boogiepop made a rare real smile in "Distorted King," which was supposed to be the last part of her story.

Plot

The Automatic Protector

Boogiepop is a separate self born from Touka Miyashita whenever great danger appears.

She exists to protect the world and appears unconsciously when needed.

Meeting Scarecrow and Claiming Her Outfit

Middle schooler Touka met the dying artificial human Scarecrow.

She took his hat and cloak after this first meeting, and since then, these items have become Boogiepop’s signature look.

The Origin of the Name

Her name, "Boogiepop," comes from her ability to appear automatically from deep within—like a bubble rising to the surface of the water when danger appears.

Way of Fighting

Boogiepop beats enemies using special steel wires.

She often destroys attackers quickly, even ones with high battle abilities or special powers.

She is also very good at fighting psychological battles, often changing or saving her enemies by attacking their weakness instead of just fighting them physically.

She is not affected by most mind attacks except from beings like Imaginator and King of Distortion, who are the same kind of existence as she is.

Urban Legend Status

Among schoolgirls, Boogiepop is famous as an urban legend.

They say she appears to kill people at the "most beautiful time" before they become ugly.

Most people gossip that she is a sort of reaper, or maybe a mysterious assassin.

Connections and Legacy

Boogiepop also makes appearances in related stories like "Beat's Discipline" and "Valpurgis Regret."

She briefly meets the main characters in these works.

Mysterious Purpose

Some characters like Poom Poom believe Boogiepop is a counterforce, a being created by the world to fight off threats like Imaginator.

However, it's unclear even to Poom Poom why Boogiepop remains even after Imaginator disappears.

Others

Boogiepop likes to whistle Wagner’s 'The Mastersingers of Nuremberg,' a song she was told about by Makiko Kisugi, who wished to be sent off by that tune if she ever died as an enemy of the world.
