Yukine is the deuteragonist of Noragami and was a 14-year-old boy who died and became a wandering spirit. He was later chosen by Yato to be his Regalia and transformed into a silver blade. Despite having a rough attitude and a rebellious streak, Yukine matures greatly over the course of the story. He struggles with feelings of emptiness from being dead, lashes out at others, and even makes mistakes that hurt Yato. Through guidance, trials, and the support of friends like Hiyori Iki, Yukine learns to own up to his actions, grows kinder, and gains new strengths as both a person and a Regalia. Even after facing danger and betrayal, Yukine tries to find meaning for himself and his role.
Yukine appears as a young teenage boy with a cute and youthful look.
After becoming Yato’s Regalia, he turns into a shining silver sword without a hilt, wrapped in cloth.
The sword looks elegant but is extremely sharp—Yato describes it as “too sharp.”
He usually wears a big hoodie, long coat, and knit hat that Yato gave him, which are always a bit too large for his body.
Yukine is rebellious and outspoken, especially towards Yato.
He often talks back, is very blunt, and can be sarcastic.
Even so, he’s emotional, cries easily, and sometimes acts his age by doing silly or bad things.
At first, he is jealous of other living kids and feels lost because he died so young.
His pain sometimes leads him to lash out or steal, especially things he can’t have anymore.
After making mistakes, he becomes more honest and open, taking responsibility for what he did.
He tries to help out and even starts working to pay back what he stole.
As Yato’s Regalia, Yukine becomes a powerful silver blade, sharper than most swords.
After his awakening as a “Blessed Vessel,” he develops even greater abilities, turning into a pair of twin swords with enough power to stop attacks from strong gods like Bishamon.
He also undergoes training in learning techniques and spells with help from Kazuma, another Blessed Vessel.
- Yato: Yato is both Yukine’s master and a parental figure. They argue often, but care deeply for each other.
- Hiyori Iki: Yukine sees Hiyori Iki as one of his few friends and wants to be like regular kids, asking her to teach him school subjects.
- Daikoku: Teaches Yukine about hard work and gives him a job to pay back what he took.
- Nora: They interact as fellow spirits, but Nora’s story becomes tragic, and Yukine eventually tries to find her when she goes missing.
- Father: Yukine’s real Father caused him great pain in life and later becomes a major enemy.
- “Fine, it's sweaty... I'm giving it back.”
Becoming a Regalia
Yukine is first seen as a wandering spirit after dying at age 14.
Yato finds him, names him, and turns him into his Regalia, a silver sword.
Yukine doesn’t remember his past and holds a lot of pain and anger, sometimes taking it out on others and even stealing things he wants.
Struggles and Growth
Yukine’s negative actions unknowingly hurt Yato, who suffers each time Yukine does wrong.
Because Yukine is dead, he feels jealous of living children and wants the things they have.
Even though Yato tries to guide him with patience, Yukine keeps acting out, from talking back to stealing.
Eventually, his misdeeds grow so bad that he nearly turns into a phantom.
During a purification ceremony, Yukine hears Yato’s words: “Live as a person.”
This touches him deeply, and Yukine finally confesses all his wrongs.
He changes dramatically, becoming more honest, gentle, and determined to do good.
Redemption and New Life
To pay back what he stole, Yukine works for Daikoku.
He asks Hiyori Iki to teach him middle school subjects because he wants to do normal things like other kids.
He grows closer to Hiyori Iki, and their friendship helps him cope.
Awakening as a Blessed Vessel
During a rescue mission in Takamagahara (the gods’ realm), Bishamon attacks Yato and Yukine.
Yukine sacrifices himself to protect Yato and appears to die.
However, he suddenly awakens as a “Blessed Vessel”—now a pair of twin swords, even stronger than before.
He can withstand Bishamon’s powerful attacks and even pushes her back.
His spiritual growth is clear, and he begins to train in special arts, learning from Kazuma, another Blessed Vessel.
Betrayal, Loss, and Searching for Purpose
During the “Oath Ceremony,” Yato is sentenced to death for a grave crime, while Yukine is sealed into a tiny stone coffin and made immortal.
After Yato wins the ceremony, all charges are dropped, and Yukine is freed, but his fingers bleed from scraping the coffin.
Yato vanishes, seeking to defeat Father, cutting his last ties.
Yukine at first doesn’t believe Yato is serious and isn’t worried.
He befriends and spends time with Nora, a spirit abandoned by Father.
One day, Nora disappears. While looking for her, Yukine runs into Father (the Sorcerer) by accident.
He asks Father about Nora and learns she died horribly.
This makes Yukine wonder about how he himself died.
Yukine reunites with Yato but learns that Yato is really trying to sever his bond.
Feeling betrayed by Yato, Yukine joins Father as his Regalia “Zenya,” following him on his path.
All of Yukine’s clothes from Yato—like the hoodie, long coat, and knit hat—are too big for him, making his appearance even more boyish.
